Cheap ‘Hackintosh’ Outperforms Mac Pro

If any of you have doubted the power of building your own PC, check this out:
Hackintosh Outperforms Mac Pro
As the guy on Lifehacker just showed, his single core, sub $1000 Hackintosh just blew away the $2k+ MacPro on nearly all benchmarks. As is being shown in the ‘Building A Mac Killer’ series – Apple doesn’t hold a candle to what you can do with a little research, patience and time.
Oooooh….his hackintosh doesn’t have iSight!! Or a free printer!! Whine all you want Macaplodocuses, Mac is a PC now – and it just can’t hang with a DIY system in terms of price/performance.

It has always been possible for the intrepid to cobble together a high performance system for less than a pre-configured name-brand computer. This isn’t news. The difference is that now they can finally install a really nice operating system on it.
I don’t see why Apple fans should cry about this. Apple won’t be going out of business anytime soon due to grandmas everywhere building their own frankenmacs. As the DIY alpha geeks fall in love with OS-X, this will only add credibility to the Mac and hasten Apple’s increasing market-share.
LOL you said Frakenmac:)
You’re right though – Apple won’t be going out of business because people are building Hackintoshes. When/If DIY Geeks fall in love with OSX, perhaps it will prompt Apple to actually make OSX available on all hardware platforms – one of my biggest gripes.

Don’t get your hopes up. As demand grows, Apple may widen their line to accommodate more configurations, but I doubt they will ever cater to the low-end bargain hunters. And the geeks will continue to build their own unsupported hackintoshes.
Apple once tried licensing their OS to OEMs in the ’90s hoping to expand to new markets. Instead, Mac clonemakers (without Apple’s R&D overhead) were able to undercut Apple and steal their customers. Apple needs the high profit margin of selling a complete hardware solution. Without Microsoft’s huge market-share that allows them to profit while licensing Windows for something like $25 per computer to OEMs, Apple would have to charge considerably more for OS X– perhaps even more than its current retail price, as Mac OS development may currently be subsidized in part by hardware profits. If the numbers don’t add up, Apple can’t win by directly competing with Microsoft’s game. Apple’s resurgence is due to playing by different rules.
The article tells us what we already know, build a good computer is cheaper when you buy in kit form.
All it means is that MacFans don’t have to spend a monkey load to have a great computer. Want all the glitz of mac looks, buy a second hand G3 Tower for £30 and put the kit in the case.
What does that article tell us that we didn’t know already? Nothing.
Sorry mister blogger, you fail at ripping it out of mac fans.
Well, Mr. Blogger, you clearly are an idiot when it comes to benchmark tests. Not only are benchmarks a case-by-case comparison (one machine may run one type of program faster but not another and vise versa). Most importantly, you overlooked a HUGE difference. Sure, the Hackintosh had a slower 2.21 Ghz processor compared to the Mac Pro’s 2.6 Ghz, but that’s not enough to offset what you intentionally OVERLOOKED: the Hackintosh has 4 GB of RAM compared to the Mac Pro’s measley 1 GB.
The best way to build a cheap Mac from the ground-up is to buy the Mac in a configuration that isn’t “all tricked out” and buy tested aftermarket parts. For example, the 32 GB of RAM that Apple offers for the new Mac Pro (3.2 Ghz 8-core) can be bought for a “mere” $4200 if you know where to look. And that’s not just 32 GB of Apple RAM, but lab-tested 32 GB of RAM. And if you get a good enough cooling system in place, an overclocked Mac (running OSX, Windows, or Linux) is no beast to mess with, especially in gaming…
Yes, it certainly is, and still 3x more expensive than a system you could build yourself.
Of course I ‘intentionally overlooked’ the memory difference – I’m not trying to be fair here sister. The blog is called Apple Can Suck My Balls, after all.
But, then again, Apple isnt really being fair to its users either, is it – charging a premium for hardware components and an OS that they’ve locked down and force you to ‘get a mac’ in order to use.
Apple sucks, learn to deal with it.

You can turn a 1 lane highway into a 4 lane highway which lets more cars drive at the same time, but that doesn’t mean the cars are driving any faster. Your CPU still determines the speed limit (yeah that’s a lil over simplistic i know FSB, memclock etc… ).
It really depends on the type of benchmark being tested. If it’s a CPU intensive test vs something that loads alot of crap into mem.
To be fair all three machines perform well, but I’m guessing the FrankenMac didn’t cost alot to build. The point of the benchmark from my perspective is that Mac doesn’t have to charge so much for common hardware. They’re really charging for the “experience” (You run what we say ON what we say) and being “different”. More power to you. You sell the sizzle… I get it.
Cost isn’t even a huge deal because a PC enthusiast wouldn’t think twice about swapping out last weeks Nvidia 9800GTX for today’s ATI 4870′s.
So if all three machines performed well, and both AppleFanboys and PC enthusiasts spend lots of $$$… what’s the diff? I think it comes down to the fact Apple Fan boys rub off like Cult members. They are “that guy” at the party who found religion and now wants to convert everyone and save them from themselves. They have a leader and never question his authority. If he says you should get an iPhone, then they line up for half a day.. like Catholics line up to fill a stadium, just to get a peek at the Pope.
So on the Doosh benchmark test… the MAC fanboys win that hands down. PC guys can’t even compete. Apple own the right’s to Doosh, and have renamed it iDoosh. They can download it from .me (if it’s even running) on the next firmware upgrade which they promise should make all Apple products more iDooshalicious. Doosher beware.. it does come with DRM.
But on the Reality check benchmark PC wins hands down. HP and Dell outsell Apple and have a firm grip on the sales numbers worldwide. Microsoft and Linux spank Apple in the enterprise section as well, and by the looks of the recent iphone ms exchange + .mac/me problems, looks like that ain’t changing anytime soon.
So while the FrankenMac proves that you’re a dropped lawsuit away from running OSX on your PC… Real life benchies show that Apple still have a huge lead in the cockometer.
On a site note.. I find it interesting that Apple is trying to get a foot in the door of enterprise with the iphone handheld & yet to buy one of these Magical devices that should unite the world and end world hunger with all their crashy apps, you need to get it through an apple “Genius” using a Handheld running Windows Mobile. If apple thinks the iPhone it’s so great… why don’t they use their own hardware to sell their own products? Maybe they know you don’t bring a butter knife to a gun fight. =)
Mac = PC + lipstick & nail polish.
Apple = Dell & HP… minus the marketshare
Apple = Microsoft’s shorter, better looking, gay brother who dresses well but can’t throw a football. hehee.
Wow. I guess I am a hater! =)

I am still laughing here…well said sir. Well said

teeheeeheeee! I am writing this one on an intel atom D945GCLF2D hackintosh.
prolly the cheapest one you could build. could even run Logic Express and make musick!
yo buddy… i just wanted to say that my C64 is freezing when I click on the pics… are you using some JavaScript or something?
Ran across this on Yahoo and I’ve got to hand it to you, I see some Awesome here, keep up the good work
Ran across this on Bing and I have to hand it to you, I see some Outstanding Stuff on here, keep up the good work Thanks!
I stumbled this page coing from yahoo. Although it didn’t meet my critera I tunneled it is safe to say this was an hooking read.
Get Mobile Spy Software!! Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Right now I recieved my brand new check iPad! Here you can also get your private check iPad for Totally free!
No point in punching things you cant see.

I have been blogging with this same topic for merely 2 years now, – what I have constantly believed is that it needs time to work to be able to overcome in this thing. But when I read your post, I was truly amazed that there are a lot of ways to go about it and find and even much better outcomes. Maybe that is why I have not really had a multitude of loyal readers. I ought to have consulted your blog post first before starting my own.
